Background
Fibre optic
measurements are needed for the specification of optical fibres as well
as optical fibre components and instrument. The surveillance of
installed optical communication network also requires a considerable
number of different measurements. The institute will be driven by the
need of the Nordic/Baltic industries.
VIFOM, Virtual Institute for Fibre Optic Metrology, is open for the
Nordic/Baltic industries for services in the areas of calibration,
evaluation/testing, education, research and consultation. By a close
collaboration between the countries we will form a resource, which
supports Nordic/Baltic industries with a high competence in fibre optic
metrology for a successful outcome of their products on the
international market.
The NMI’s in the different countries will form the base of this
institute. This will assure qualities as metrology competence,
neutrality and secrecy. The close collaboration with universities and
industries will broaden the competence base in the Fibre Optic
technology and will multiply the services offered.

Goals
Organise an active Network in the Nordic and Baltic countries for fibre
optic metrology with at least 20 interested partners with at least 10
interested institutes, calibration laboratories and/or universities.
Gather the Nordic and Baltic countries fibre optic metrology expertise
for the benefit for the industry.
This web page will be supported for a minimum of five years by the
participating institutes.
A number of services in calibration, evaluation, testing and transfer of
knowledge will be brought forward.
Participants
Project leader: Anne Andersson, SP Swedish National Testing and Research
Institute, Sweden.
Project participants: Jan C Petersen, DFM Danish Fundamental Metrology
Institute, Denmark, Erkki Ikonen HUT Helsinki University of Technology,
Finland. Special efforts will be made to include other interested
partners as well as institutes in Island and Norway and the Baltic
states.
